Free Solution to Windows Security
|
If you are not careful with using Windows to browse the internet and share data with your peers, you are inviting trouble. Very soon your PC will be a home to numerous viruses, worms and spy wares causing you a lot of trouble. Here I provide a list of free software that will help you protect your PC against these threats. Before, I start here are 2 most important instructions:
- Never, never give out your password to anyone. It is like giving a key to your home.
- Do not open attachments you receive from an unknown sender. Even if the sender is known, be very careful before opening attachments. If you are unsure, do not open the attachment.
Now for the no-cost Windows security solution:
Anti Virus – Avira AntiVir Personal Edition AntiVir is pretty damn good for a free anti-virus. Download AntiVir, install it and keep it updated. AntiVir will prompt you to update every 3 days or so. Do what it says.
Anti Spy ware – SpyWare Doctor (Google Pack) Download Google Pack with at least Spy ware Doctor and Norton Security Scan. Google Pack lets you choose the software that it must automatically manage. Spy ware Doctor is one the most un-intrusive programs I have ever seen. You will never know that it is there and doing its job. Norton Security Scan is a kind of off line anti virus. It does not perform any sort of real time scan on files, e-mails and attachments as and when you access them but then you have AntiVir for that. It is still good to have Norton Security Scan. You will also have to keep it updated and manually run it once a month to scan your entire system. If you want, you can schedule Norton Security Scan using Windows Task Scheduler for monthly scans.
Mozilla Firefox Download Firefox, install it and use it exclusively for browsing the internet. You will avoid a lot of threats from entering your computer just by using Firefox for internet browsing.
Windows Firewall By default, Windows XP will turn on its default firewall. Do not turn it off. The Firewall will inform you when an application is trying to access the internet. Read carefully and then decide if the application really deserves to access the internet. If you are unsure, deny access.
Windows Updates Like the Firewall, never turn off this feature. Microsoft keeps patching security holes and vulnerabilities using Windows Updates. Install the updates as soon as they are available.
I have installed the same set of software on my computer and have managed to keep my Windows PC quite secure for some time now. |
